Just popping in to say hello. I attended an SCBWI event at the Barnes and Noble that will be closing soon (sadly). I’ll tell you about it later. In the meantime, if you have never heard of SCBWI, check it out!

Tonight for bed, I told my daughter a story instead of reading her one. I intended to just tell her Goldilocks and the Three Bears since she was already half asleep anyway, but when I started telling the story and describing the main character, she turned out to not be very golden at all. Something took over and started telling this different, but pretty cool story, using me as the adventure guide. The little heroine had curly brown hair, almond butter skin, and eyes the color of hot chocolate. She was an only child and her best friend was the island she lived on. As she explored the island, they got to know each other very well. But one day, a volcano at the southernmost end of the island erupted and as the lava flowed down to the ocean, two things were born….
I’m going to work on this one. I made up the story as I told it to Naomi and I remember everything, even the end. You can probably see where the main character and the setting came from. I would love to really work this out and get it down on paper. I think it could make a good picture book. I’ll keep you posted.
Oh wow, it has truly been a LONG time since I have posted to my site here, and so much has happened. For one, we had a baby! Having our daughter has definitely been life changing, but now that she is almost one, I feel like my life is under control enough to get back to writing. I have plans and goals and wonderful ideas that I will share with you over the next few months so keep checking back!
Okay, so I was told by my friend to stop polluting the story with my horrible attempts at visual art so this post will just be words (an art form I know how to manipulate). And don’t worry, she didn’t really say that, but it is true that I should focus on the words and let her focus on the illustrations. I’m excited and I can’t wait to see AND show you the completed story. Until then, I present you with the 3rd and 4th stanzas (along with the fine print that this might not be final version so only get slightly attached). :)
Up through the clouds my red hat flew away,
And I wondered if she would come back some day.
Well, that silly hat, she did something quite strange.
She flew up through the clouds and back down with the rain.
My red hat soared and twirled through the town
Making some people laugh and some people frown.
Finally! I’m posting a blog about something that I’m writing. Yay! Soooo, as you may not know but will soon discover, I have MAAANY works in progress. Some of them are just titles on a blank page because a certain phrase or piece of a song stuck with me. Fortunately for me, I do have a couple of works that are closer to completion than that, and Daralesha’s Red Hat is one of them.
Daralesha’s Red Hat is a children’s story about a little girl’s hat that jumps off her head one day and takes off on a little adventure of its own. In theory, the story is complete, but I’m still editing it. I also need to get illustrations and graphics so don’t get too attached to my shaky attempt at her flighty red hat seen below.
My dream is to make this book available as an e-book (interactive would be sooo awesome) so I’m exploring that option, too. Another dream is to make this the first story of many, all connected in some magical way (that I already know but will save that secret for later). :) In the meantime, here are the first two stanzas for your viewing pleasure! Tell me what you think.
I have a red hat that jumps all around.
It’s fat and wide and yellow-bound.
My name “Daralesha” is written on top,
And I like my funny hat. I like it a lot.
One day while playing at my dad’s barbershop,
I was running around when my hat jumped off!
She hopped off my head and flew to the sky
Zooming in circles before waving bye-bye.
